RC hobbies are not just popular with children but there are many adults enjoying this pastime as well. Many of us will have heard the term RC but not all of us understand what it means. In this article we hope to provide a further explanation as to what RC is.
The term RC stands for "remote control" and allows you to control one device with another without them being attached to each other. The first actual remote control device to be introduced in 1903 at the Paris of Academy of Science was the Telekino invented by Leonardo Torres Quevada. This was a small robot that was able to execute certain commands given to it that were transmitted using electromagnetic waves.
Most of the remote control devices that are used in the home whether for controlling the TV or DVD player use an infrared light. The beam of light from these devices is what controls the functions of the target device. However, in order to be used effectively they need to have an obstructed view of the target device and cannot be used at any distance from them.
When it comes to devices used for controlling objects in RC hobbies it is radio frequency waves that are used to transmit the commands. Unlike infrared beams these devices don't need to be in sight of the object that they are controlling and can be used from some distance away.
Today the devices used for remote control cars, boats and planes are comprised of four components. There will be a transmitter, a receiver, a motor and a power source. The transmitter is the device that you have in your hand and which allows you to control the movements of the remote control vehicle. It is this which sends out the signals to the receiver which is contained in the remote control vehicle and which then operates its motor.
For power to be supplied to the RC vehicles motor either a battery pack is used which can contain either normal or rechargeable batteries, or it may be the engine is powered using nitro methane or gasoline. These last two fuels actually allow RC vehicles to travel at speeds exceeding 70mph.
Along with remote control vehicles being something that one can enjoy for a few hours at the weekend, there are some people who will race against each other with theirs. There are clubs around the world where enthusiasts can meet and talk about the various models as well as compete against one and other.
May people see getting involved in RC hobbies as an expensive one, but a good quality ready built model can set you back as little as $100. Certainly for those who only are thinking about getting interested in this hobby buying one like this is a great way to start.
